Casale Iris is just 30 minutes away from Porto San Giorgio with its marina and beautiful sand beaches. In the Marche 80km of coastline ensures an abundance of beaches (17 of them blue flag) that cater to all types of visitor. Try San Elpidio and Civitanova Marche for windsurfing and sailing, Grottammare or San Benedetto del Tronto for family friendly bathing (shallow waters and a sea barrier). Family-friendly cycling along the seaside cycle path between San Benedetto del Tronto and Cupra Marittima is doable even by small children and leisurely cyclists.
Nearby Fermo has preserved its Renaissance layout and is one of the richest centres in the Marches when it comes to history and art. The Piazza del Popolo in Ascoli Piceno is a breathtaking Renaissance square with the domed Basilica di San Francesco at one end, and the art-deco Caffè Meletti at the other, lined with arched walkways and cobbled paving stones in between. The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Loreto is a jewel of Italian religious architecture.Tiny hilltop Medieval towns are in abundance, each with its own city wall and rustic stone brick houses with colourful window shutters and terracotta roofs set against the backdrop of rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves.
Here you can escape the crowds and a enjoy a truly relaxing holidays. Due to the lack of package tourism the region has preserved its charm, and the locals are friendly and welcoming. You don't have long queues and there are hardly any tourist restaurants serving poor quality food. You are ensured value for money, and you are able to discover the region at your own pace. Of course Casale Iris is a haven of tranquility, set against a backgdrop of rolling hills and small villages.
Spring and autumn offer cooler temperatures in the 20s for sightseeing, walking and cycling. With over 200 medieval hilltop villages boasting narrow cobbled streets, churches and large piazzas and panoramic views there is plenty to explore on foot. Spring is a beautiful season for walking among beautiful flowers and blooming trees with the snow-capped Sibillini mountains as a backdrop. During the autumn harvest, wine and food festivals abound, celebrating truffles, chestnuts and other delicacies the region has to offer. As the region is also of great architectural interest many of the towns such as Fermo, Ascoli Piceno, Urbino or Ancona are year-round attractions. In summer the Macerata opera festival is one of the highlights of the cultural calendar. It takes place in Macerata's Sferisterio and offers classic and contemporary performances. Of course there are many other local festivals taking place in the summer, often culminating in large firework displays.
Who can claim that they don't enjoy regional food and wines when travelling to Italy? We found that in the Marche most eateries offer excellent quality and good value for money, whether it is a local bar or pizzeria or a fine seafood restaurant. Try Vincisgrassi (baked lasagne), arrosticini (lamb skewers) fritto misto (see photo) or olive ascolane (meat filled, breaded and fried olives) in addition to the famous pasta from Campofilone. There are many more reasons to visit the Marche region of Italy: you can enjoy water sports, shopping, go skiing in the winter, there are excellent outlets for Italian fashion and shoes, and for lovers of art and architecture galleries, historical theatres, churches, and medieval and Renaissance towns and palaces offer rich cultural experiences. You can take wonderful daytrips in the car or on a bike to admire the glorious countryside, and go trekking or hillwalking in the Sibillini mountains.
